Copyrights

The copyright in Brazil is ruled by the Law 9610 of February 19, 1998, which are protected intellectual works, fruit of the mental creation, such as the literary or scientific texts, the song lyrics, the theatrical plays, the photographic works, the drawings, the paintings, the sculptures, the illustrations, the architecture projects, landscapes, computer programs and so on.

The author literary work protection will be given according to the nature of the task. Therefore:

  • The National Library Foundation is the agency in charge of registration of literary works;
  • The Plastic Arts School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro is in charge of the registration of the plastic art works;
  • The Music School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro is in charge of musical works;
  • The National Institute of Cinema is in charge of cinematographic works;
  • The Federal Council for Engineering, Architecture and Agronomy is in charge of an architectonic works.

Regarding the copyright validity it will last the author’s life time plus the period of 70 years as of January 1st of the following year of the author’s death.
